African Liberation Day

WHAT IS AFRICAN LIBERATON DAY (ALD)?

On the 25th of May 1963, African Heads of states met in Addis Ababa to found the Organization of African Unity (OAU). May 25th was declared African Liberation Day and has been commemorated throughout the world ever since. ALD is a day to raise awareness on our continued struggle against capitalism and imperialism, inspire African unity and reaffirm our commitment to Pan-Africanism. We’re not sure when ALD became Africa Day, but we reject the removal of the word ‘liberation’ until all foreign occupation forces have been removed from Africa and the continent is politically united. Since 2022, United African Diaspora has been commemorating this day in Calgary.
